City Launches Its Knowledge Saves Power Project
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat has launched its new Knowledge Saves Power project. This project is being completed through the HAT Smart program and is made possible by a financial contribution from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
Over the upcoming months, City of Medicine Hat residential utility customers will begin seeing the introduction of new customer engagement methods to improve energy efficiency in the community.
From additional messaging on utility bills to the introduction of a MyHEAT map that will enable residents to visualize heat lost from their homes, the City will be introducing various tools to encourage action amongst residents in Medicine Hat.
“Our goal is to provide customers with more information and develop tools to help them better understand their energy usage compared to local trends,” says Jaret Dickie, Manager of the City’s HAT Smart program. “We are hoping that by making more information available to our customers, we will see a continued improvement in energy efficiency within our community.”
"The Government of Canada is proud to support initiatives like this, which improve energy efficiency and ultimately help Canada meet its climate goals,” said the Honourable Jim Carr, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “By helping residents better understand their energy usage, this initiative will result in cost savings and help the City of Medicine Hat transition to the lower carbon economy of the future."
NRCan funding for this project – in the amount of $278,580 – is part of the department’s support for multi-sectoral projects that drive demand for energy efficiency and energy conservation in Canadian housing. This project is one of eight selected through a competitive process.
The information made available through this project will also help City staff identify opportunities for future engagement campaigns. The results will be used to determine which engagement activities having the biggest impact within the community.
