Medicine Hat – Four Medicine Hat residents are being recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Civic Recognition Awards are presented every two years to individuals whom the community believes enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat through their dedication, activities, and accomplishments in the areas of culture, environment, humanitarianism, community inclusion, sports and recreation and community service.

“The Civic Recognition Awards are the City’s way of recognizing those selfless persons that weave the vital fabric of our society,” said Les Pearson, Councillor for Civic Functions. “We owe them – and others like them – for enhancing the great quality of life we enjoy in our community!"

The 2017 Civic Recognition Award recipients are:
  • Gerald Freedman – Humanitarian Award
  • John Slater – Environmental Award
  • Arne Handley – Cultural Award
  • Stan Sakamoto – Community Service Award
An Awards Selection Committee, made up of representatives from City advisory boards and committees, recommends recipients to City Council from the nominations received.

The Civic Recognition Awards will be presented Thursday, May 25, 2017 starting at 7 p.m. at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, Main Theatre. The public is welcome to attend
