New City of Medicine Hat Generation Facility

Construction is now underway for a new electrical generation unit in the city’s northwest Box Springs area. Once completed, the new generation unit will ensure sufficient electricity supply to the City’s customers. Council approved this $66 million project in July 2015, following a feasibility study and economic assessment.

An official sod-turning ceremony took place in June, 2016. Quarterly Updates showing construction of “Unit 16” will be posted here regularly. Anticipated completion is 2017.

The location of the new generation unit in the Box Springs area is strategic in nature. Located away from the power plant, it will operate on a separate supply of natural gas. This meets the Alberta Utilities Commission guidelines for electrical generation capability for municipalities.
The City’s current maximum supply of power is 203 megawatts. Once operational, the new GE LM-6000 will add 43 megawatts to the City’s power supply, for a total of 246 MW. If the current largest unit goes offline, this will ensure sufficient power supply is available.

Power Supply in the City of Medicine Hat
Current maximum supply
203 MW
If the City's largest unit was to go offline, the total supply would be 148 MW (203 - 55 MW)
Largest generating unit
55 MW

New LM-6000 generation unit
43 MW added to the system
Total maximum supply will be increased to 246 MW
Peak demand in summer
170 MW
The addition of a new generator ensures adequate supply is available to the City's customers (246 -55 = 191 MW)
